Downhill Skateboarding, Street Luge & "Team For Ride"...

Meet "Team For Ride"

We are delighted to be involved with this awesomely diverse French downhill skateboarding & street luge team & would like to introduce them, & gravity sports, to you.  The team compete in a broad range of gravity sports, which we try & explain to the dazed & confused amongst you below...

The team members are:

Fabien Prual - riding streetluge and classic luge in competition but also riding skate in slalom, cruising carving ... (2009: #11 in streetluge / #16 in classic luge)

Thibaut Meline - riding streetluge and classic luge in competition and riding skate in cruising (2009: #15 in streetluge / #17 in classic luge)

Quentin Drouault riding - downhill skateboard in competition and also riding in carving and cruising (2009: #146 in stand up)

Phillipe Dupuy - riding downhill skateboard in competition for the first year and also riding in carving and cruising.

Marie Bougourd - the lady of the team, riding downhill skateboard and classic luge and also riding in slalom, carving and cruising. She is a serious opponent on the girl's competitions...

What is Downhill Skateboarding?

Downhill Skateboard riders stand on long skateboards designed for stability and speed, and assume an aerodynamic position to achieve great speeds. Probably the most spectacular of the sports, it offers great spectating especially through corners.

What is Slalom Skateboard?

Slalom Skateboard involves being the fastest to skate through a set course of cones. The cones are set up in a straight line at a set distance (tight slalom) or spread across the width of the road at random intervals (giant slalom). Knocking down cones results in penalties or disqualification.

What is Classic Luge?

The Classic Luge, or Buttboard, is the low-tech brother to Street Luge. Still a form of skateboard on which you lie, the Buttboard is shorter, narrower, uses smaller wheels and has to be made from a single piece of plywood. While not as fast or high performance as Street Luge the Classic is great fun, requires a lot of skill and due to very low costs is a great entry point for beginners.

What is Street Luge?

Street luge was born in Southern California as downhill skateboarders found they could reach faster speeds by lying down on their skateboards. This early form of the sport is now referred to as "classic style" or "butt boarding."

In 1975, the first professional race was held at Signal Hill, California and hosted by the U.S. Skateboard Association. The race winner was based on top speed. The boards used in this race varied from basic skateboards to complex skate cars in which the rider was completely enclosed by plastic or fiberglass. The sport was not commonly referred to as street luge at this time but the term luge was used to describe some participants riding position, lying supine on their boards.  many riders chose to stand & injuries were commonplace so safety rules & equipment continued to be implemented throughout the 1980's - 1990's.  In the early 1990s, some Austrian skateboarders started sitting down on their skateboards on the way back from teaching skiing in the Alps. This activity lead to a classic style street luge race in Austria, riding wooden boards closer to large skateboards than the usual street luge, which is heavier, longer, has larger wheels and more trucks than a skateboard or classic luge. There is now a healthy street luge riding and racing presence in many European countries & over 1200+ active street luge riders in the world. Current street luge stretchers are made from many materials including steel, aluminum, wood, and carbon fibre.

The majority of the street luge stretchers in the world are custom made although commercial models are now available. Actual stretchers designs can vary as the construction rules are very open and allow for numerous design considerations.

Competing in Downhill & Streetluge...

Riders participating in sanctioned racing events are required to wear safety equipment including:
1.Hard shell helmet with chin strap and face shield or goggles

2.Leather or Kevlar racing suit

3.Leather or Kevlar gloves

4.Sturdy Shoes

Race courses are usually held on mountain roads but have been held on city streets as well. Courses can range in length from 0.5 to 3 miles (1 to 5 km) and vary in layout (number and severity of turns). Racing can take the following formats:
1.Single elimination with 2, 4, or 6 racers at a time

2.Double elimination with 2, 4, or 6 racers at a time

3.Timed trials

4.No elimination points system (points for each finishing position in several heats)

5.Mass runs, with up to 20 racers at a time (positions are decided by the order they cross the finish line)

For more information on streetluge, downhill skateboarding & an impressive range of other (slightly madcap) sports in the UK, visit http://www.ukgsa.org/ UK Gravity Sports Association.

Team For Ride are using our ceramic hybrid bearings (metal rings, ceramic balls & a high-speed plastic cage) & have found them, to quote Fabien "My feeling: GREAT!

No sensation of resistive torque while I was pushing, great acceleration... I didn't test it on the fastest spot I know, but just on this one I was around 85km/h and feeling great, I don't think that will be this bearing that will slow me down...to give you some idea of the speed we are going and the efforts the bearings are subject to, Phillipe had been officialy recorded over 94 km/h but the three skaters of the team had rode over 95km/h
and the two lugers, Thibaut and me had rode over 125 km/h and I'd like to break the 125 on classic luge wich has never been done officialy."

Quentin is pictured above, competing in a downhill race.  He won the Boarder X race at Lyon last weekend with the aid of our bearings - congratulations Quentin & to all in Team For Ride!

Skaiti - skaters raising money for Haiti

SMB were delighted to sponsor Keith O'Leary, who took part in Skaiti (a fantastic fundraising event for disaster relief in Haiti) on Saturday 10th April.  Skaiti was a 24 hour event in which 250 brave souls attempted to skate as far as possible in 24 hours, around Dunsfold Park in Surrey.

Keith has survived to tell the tale & reported his progress to us today:

"Well, I managed 125 miles in total and had a fantastic time in the sunshine before taking a tumble at roughly 2am on Sunday. Stepping on a wheel in the darkness often results in a face plant.

My tent looked incredibly welcoming at that point, so I grabbed a little sleep before setting off again. The organisers, Jo, Jack, and Steve did an amazing job in putting on the event and looking after everyone. The Ceramic Bearings you supplied fared very well and I got some good feedback from other participants - especially regarding the cost price (Powell/Bones ceramics being a lot more expensive, and not commonly stocked).

I took a photo at the start of the event with my nice clean SMB T-shirt and hat. There's also one of me coming out of a speed tuck and looking far too camp for my liking (to save Keith's modesty, we promised not to show the "camp" picture!). There will be a few more emerging as people upload images to Facebook etc.

Thanks again for your support.  Keith "

What a phenomenal event!  The official website http://skaiti.webs.com/  will be worth checking out (it's not too late to make a donation) & should have more photos of the event coming up soon.  Our hearty congratulations to everyone who took part, volunteered, organised etc, as you've managed to raise an impressive £13000 so far.

Schaeffer Mclean, sponsored skater update...

Schaeffer's Mum, Eve, has sent us an update this week -

"Schaeffer will be attending the opening of the Bridgewater Skate Plaza this Friday 9th. And the new skatepark in Bristol at Keynsham is holding an opening skate contest on 22nd May which he will be entering. In his recent video, much of that was filmed when he went on a little tour of skateparks in the north. He loved Manchester's skatepark (Central). He is very excited about the different skateparks which are popping up all over the place and has recently skated the new park in Cheddar, and hoping to go to the new one at Marlborough very soon."  Thanks for the update guys, it's always great to hear your news.

Good luck in the upcoming contest Schaeffer - we'll have everything crossed for you ;0).
  Happy skating this weekend!

BIG Bearings!

We may be a specialist in miniature bearings, but we're bigging up our range...

OK, they're not quite as big as this!

We now stock up to 6814 (70x90x10mm) & 6914 (70x100x16mm) bearings & for us this is a pretty big deal - please excuse the pun - as our bearings start from just 0.6mm bore!

Schaeffer Mclean's new vid...

We at SMB are proud to bring you the latest film antics of our sponsored skater, Schaeffer Mclean. Now turned six years old, Schaeffer's new video demonstrates a real development in his skills & also what a genius his Mum, Eve, is as she manages to film & skate simultaneously!

April 9th 2010...
Sorry!  Apparently, we owe the awesome skate video to Schaeffer's 13 year old sister, who is a film genius & inline-skating goddess!!!!  The whole family was probably the inspiration for Disney's "The Incredibles"... ;0)

SMB sponsors Keith O'Leary

SMB are delighted to announce that we're sponsoring Keith O'Leary in the upcoming Skaiti event.  Keith is skating to raise money for disaster relief in Haiti.  He is very ambitiously planning to skate for a minimum of 150 miles or for around 20 hours - either way it is a MASSIVE challenge & we wish him every success.

The event's organisers have put together an amazing event...

"We're going to be skating around the clock! 250 Longboarders, skateboarders, inliners, and rollerskaters will be coming together to skate at SKAITI - a 24 hour event being hosted at Dunsfold Park in Surrey... on the famous test track featured on the BBC's TOP GEAR.  SKAITI’S aim is to raise as much money as possible to help with the disaster relief efforts following the earthquake in Haiti. We're going to push off at NOON on SATURDAY the 10th of APRIL and we'll be coasting to the finish at noon the following day.

SKATERS of all kinds will be there: young, old, families, longboarders, street skaters, slalomers, inliners, rollerbladers, rollerskaters... all sorts! Help us make this a huge fundraising success, by offering us your support.

ALL SPONSORSHIP MONEY will be donated to SHELTERBOX. Shelterbox is an international disaster relief charity that provides emergency shelter to those affected by disaster worldwide. You can find out more about Shelterbox and its work in Haiti at http://www.shelterbox.org/

PLEASE HELP. You can support us by donating, or by sponsoring a skater via the Skaiti JustGiving page...

http://www.justgiving.com/Skaiti24
PLEASE SEND THE JUSTGIVING LINK to all your friends, family, and colleagues asking them to give what they can.

SPREAD THE WORD about supporting the event! Please post a link to this site into your Facebook profile, Bebo, Twitter and any forums that you use. If you have any questions about Skaiti please don’t hesitate to contact me at skaiti24@yahoo.co.uk "

We would like to wish organisers & participants alike every success with this mighty challenge - best of luck to you all!  Even if you can't go along to support the event, you can pick up lots of lovely merchandise from the Skaiti website http://www.skaiti.webs.com/ - their t-shirt is shown above.

We will, of course, update you on Keith's progress after the event.

SMB now sponsors X Park Skate series

Rick M. of X Park Pensacola FL. has told us
"We're holding a contest the last weekend of every month to raise money for new surface and start our pro shop. The contests are judged by the skaters themselves and the total point winner at the end of the year is going to win a trip to Woodward skatecamp. The X Park is back up and running thanks to the local skateboarders and companies like yours that support grassroots skateboarding.

You can check us out at http://xparkpensacola.com.

We also have the World Rolling Series coming through on the 10th of April. It's an inline skating world championship qualifier. We're expecting 600 to 1500 people for that event. I'm really excited about the direction the park is going. Thanks again for your support.

This park is run by skateboarders and it's gonna stay that way. Hope to hear from you soon!!! Skate and Destroy!!!"

We're proud to sponsor the X Park Skate series - keep up with the latest results at http://xparkpensacola.com/engine.php?id=4

Tamiya Sand Scorcher Video...

A real treat for Tamiya RC fans.  If you haven't seen it yet, this is a lovely Tamiya promo for 2010, featuring some vintage vehicle action too.  We love the shots in the sea water but really, REALLY don't recommend trying it out yourself without some serious protection for your beloved RC vehicle!

We have created quite a useful materials guide - http://www.smbbearings.com/SMBbearingselection.htm - so check it out if you want to know whether it is safe to drive you RC components through seawater David Hasselhoff in Baywatch style...

Fishing off Old Lilstock Harbour, Somerset...

Three brave souls having a very stressful time fishing on Lilstock Beach yesterday - one man is clearly so stressed he's having to have a little lie-down! The old harbour at Lilstock is a favourite haunt for local sea-fishing/sea-angling fans, & Mike Thrussel of http://www.worldofseafishing.com/ has the following advice if you fancy a visit:

"SPECIES
Thornback rays can show throughout the year along with conger eels. May to July produces smoothound with sole showing from June through to September. Cod show from October, though it's usually November before they appear in any numbers. Whiting, pout and dogfish make it a good mixed bag venue.

BAITS
Ragworm is a top all round bait for the whiting, pout, dogs and rays, but it's essential to tip with squid for consistent catches. The sole take rag and lug. Peeler crab or hermit crab are best for the smoothound. For the winter cod tip big lug baits with rag or squid.

TACKLE & TACTICS
This area is generally patches of clean ground giving on to reefs and rough ground patches. Reef ground is evident to the left hand side and is very snaggy but can produce the better fish. Fish here from low water through high water and for two hours back. To the right side the ground is slightly easier to fish and produces well in southwest winds and can produce fish any time of tide. There is also a sewer pipe between the reefs which fishes well over high water.

With snaggy ground evident you'll need a tough 5-6oz beachcaster, and for long range a Penn 525 Mag loaded with 20lb line or maybe a 7000 sized reel and 25lb line, plus a 60lb shock leader.

Pulley rigs made from 60lb line are best here with a short 15-inch 35lb hook trace. Most anglers prefer a two-hook pennel rig using Viking pattern hooks size 4/0 for the cod and rays, but up the hook length to 80lbs when after the conger.

A three-hook flapper rig and size 2 Aberdeen's is the best choice for the smaller general species. Drop to size 6 Aberdeen's when after the sole."

Skaiti - skaters raising money for Haiti

We thought this worthwhile project deserved a big mention - even if we just spread the word a tiny bit more...

http://roundupbout.blogspot.com/ are advertising Skaiti - a twenty-four hour fundraising event for the victims of the Haiti earthquakes.

"When? Saturday April 10th at noon
Where? Dunsfold Park Aerodrome, Surrey - the famous Top Gear test track
Who? Anyone who skates - rollerskaters, inliners, longboarders and skateboarders

The aim is to raise as much money as possible to help the disaster relief in Haiti, whilst skating around the clock. All money raised will go to the charity Shelterbox, and it doesn't matter if you can't make all twenty-four hours of the event.

Camping is available on the site, and the runway lights will be switched on at night, so don't worry about skating in the dark!
All you have to do to take part, is raise your sponsorship, and turn up on the day! Please email the organisers at skaiti24@yahoo.co.uk to let them know that you'll be turning up.

If you'd rather raise your money online, it can be paid into JustGiving, check http://roundupbout.blogspot.com/ for details

Minimum sponsorship is £20 per person, but everyone who raises over £50 will be entered into a prize draw, so please make sure your sponsors who go to JustGiving to donate write YOUR NAMR against the donation.

Please spread the word, there's space on the track for 250 skaters."

Good luck to the organisers & the participants, it sounds like it will be one heck of an event!

Schaeffer Mclean, sponsored skater

It's been a little while since we've heard from 6 year old skate-legend Scheaffer Mclean & his Mum Eve - & here's why...

It's not every Mum who'll build their (admittedly very cool & awesome) six year old their own skate-park on the drive... way to go Eve!!

Full Ceramic Bearings are here...

We are very excited... We've been talking about it for ages, but now they're actually here...
Our first two sizes of full ceramic bearings have just been delivered - HOORAY!!!!!!!!!

We are now the proud owners of 608 (8x22x7mm) & 626 (6x19x6mm) bearings - they're ideal for situations where you need amazing resistance to chemical corrosion, marine applications (salt-water can't touch these puppies!), applications that require completely non-magnetic bearings or electrically insulated bearings. They are composed of Zirconia rings & balls & have a hardwearing PEEK cage, see below:

They're not so good for high speeds or loads, any kind of shock loads (they're too brittle) or any temperature over 260 degrees centigrade - but that's high enough for most of us to get a decent tan ;0) . For those of your who need additional temperature ranges, we can order in full-complement bearings to cope with temperatures in excess of 800 degrees centigrade. We'll hopefully be introducing a wider range in the next few months, together with some hybrid ceramic bearings (steel rings & ceramic ball) for applications requiring higher speeds & loads.

Watch this space!

Fishing Magazine...

From the author of http://sleepinginthedirt.blogspot.com/ , it is a virtual magazine full of gorgeous fishing photos & general artistic loveliness. For a first ever issue, the magazine is a real winner - can't wait to see issue number 2!!

Plastic Bearings...

You're hearing it here first! We're increasing our range of miniature plastic bearings to include even smaller sizes.

Chris can tell you a bit more about what they're used for:

"Bearings made from plastic/acetal resin (AC) with balls made from 316 stainless steel or glass are more corrosion resistant. They will however, corrode in the prescence of certain chemicals for which made-to-order polyethylene or polypropylene bearings with glass balls may be a better choice. These are generally termed as "plastic" bearings and like 316 stainless steel bearings, are not suitable for anything other than low loads and low speeds and should not be used in temperatures of greater than 90C. These types are also low precision so not suitable for instrument use.

The smaller bearings are not usually available in these synthetic materials, so we're really pleased to have been able to extend our range, with sizes now starting from just 3mm bore!

Plastic bearings are manufactured with plastic (acetal resin) rings & balls and 316 grade stainless (316 suffix) or glass balls (GL suffix) for use as corrosion resistant bearings or non magnetic bearings (we can supply to order plastic bearings with polyethylene rings and glass balls for more corrosive environments). All plastic bearings are only suitable for low loads and low speeds and should not be used in temperatures greater than 90C.

We normally stock these open but they may also be supplied as ZRS with one acetal shield and one rubber seal. Plastic bearings are not made to the same tolerances as steel bearings. Normal inner and outer ring tolerances on these bearings are +/- 0.05mm. Other sizes of plastic bearings are available but may be subject to minimum order quantities."

For details of our current range, please visit http://www.smbbearings.com/Framesets/Plastic_Frame.htm. As new bearings arrive, we'll update this page with further details.

F1 in Schools National Finals

Congratulations on making it to the World Championships Mach1 team!

A stellar performance at last weekend's F1 in Schools Competition National Finals, has assured the Mach 1 team from Lutterworth College, Leicester, a ticket to Singapore for this September's F1 in Schools World Championship finals.

Chris managed to bag this vid of the team collecting their awards...

Mach 1's Elliot tells us more about their success & what the future holds...

"Although missing out on first prize by a whisker we came second overall in the UK and we won the best engineered car in the UK as well. This means that Mach1 will still be going to Singapore to the World Championships in September. We will combine with a second place team from another country, which at the moment looks most likely to be either France or Portugal, to create a collaboration team. We are currently unsure as to who we will combine with but we will tell you as soon as we find out .

This means lots of changes will happen e.g. the team name will probably change to something both teams are happy with, the team size will grow from 4 to 6 strong and the team will have to communicate through the internet with various software such as Skype and there is a possibility of a language barrier issue but not so much for us because the rules state that all work has to be written in English. So forming a collaboration team could bring lots of inconveniences but again this brings lots of opportunity!

We will keep you updated with the latest about the forming of the team then once we settle into a routine we will start sending out monthly newsletters. Obviously there is a cost with the travelling and accommodation of going to Singapore along with the general cost of running the team and maintaining its high quality in any area we work in. And same again we will concentrate on giving you the return on investment you expect. This will be helped by the fact we have appeared in both local and regional newspapers six times between the regional final and the national final and there will also be a live television broadcast at the Singapore grand prix which is where the World Championships are held. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support that has taken us to this stage and I hope these relationships can be sustained up to and beyond the World Championships."

And here's their journey to the finals, filmed as a very spiffy promo by the team...

Everyone here at SMB is immensely proud to have been involved with such a driven, dynamic & charming team & we're really excited to be with you every step of the way to Singapore in September.

Many congratulations once again!

Wheel Skates... the next big thing?

How do you fancy these in your awkwardly wrapped & somewhat misshapen Christmas stocking then folks?! These are wheelskates, "a pair of large wheels that have the skater's feet suspended below the axles enabling a smoother, more fluid skating experience that crosses boundaries into skiing and cycling". The large wheel & pneumatic tyre of Wheel-skates allow you to:

  • gain and maintain momentum with less effort,
  • greater stability and more manoeuvrability
  • skate over rougher terrain or ski down grassy slopes
or commute like a bicycle free of seat & handle bars

With the snow we've got currently, it could make for an interesting commute to & from work. And as for the journey home from the Christmas party...!!

Outstanding Landboarding vid...

This vid kind of makes skateboarding look a little bit tame... Enjoy!

Don't try this at home folks, at least not without the appropriate safety gear & training. Take it from one who's done enough face-plants in the mud (& never really learnt to fall with style, Buzz Lightyear fashion!) to know that landboarding really is as hard as it looks... ;0)

Happy weekend everyone!

F1 in Schools - 1 month to the UK finals...

With just under one month to go now until the UK National finals of the F1 in Schools competition, we're pleased to bring you the latest update from the lovely Mach1 team at Lutterworth College, Leicester, who we are proud to be sponsoring in this year's event.

They've attached a preview picture of the new car for us,

"The shape has been decided on but I may have to reshuffle some decals" Elliot of Mach1 team advises.

This car has a few new tricks up its sleeve, which we have promised not to reveal just yet, in case the competition is having a sneak preview too! We'll keep you up to date as we hear more from the development team at Mach1.

Cycling & festive cheer!

Real Cycling's blog post

has this week filled us with festive cheer & we thought we'd share it with you!

Admittedly, Real Cycling's message was less festive cheer & more safety first (very importantly) but, if we're being honest we just like the twinkly lights!

Please send us more twinkly pictures & we will post them. Red Bikes has very kindly sent us the image below (you need to check out Red Bike's Christmas tree vs cat video, it's very funny - http://redbikes.blogspot.com/2009/12/lauras-christmas-tree-wont-last-long.html )

Happy Birthday Schaeffer!

We're really excited to be able to bring you Schaeffer Mclean's latest skate vid today. It is his sixth birthday on Monday, so we'd all like to say

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SCHAEFFER!!!
Since we last told you about his exploits, Schaeffer has been very busy - his Mum Eve tells us more:

"We went to Milan at half term and some of the footage is in the vid. We aren't doing King of the Groms this year, we will probably wait until he's a bit older, but meanwhile we have been skating all over. He just did a little rippers competion at the Boardroom, Leicester, last Sunday and he did really well, and won 3 prizes!"

Well done Schaeffer, we're really proud of you. We hope that you enjoy wearing your new SMB skate gear, which is winging its way to you very soon...

We just have to give a quick mention to this post:

Whether you want to buy anything or not, this is funny! I love the " brother who just turned fifteen - so bored and world-weary that you wonder if he's into anything at all. Invariably you'll find out that the grumpy, sarcastic little blank starer actually does enjoy a handful of things: skating, hanging out, listening to music, etc" bit!!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Cycling in England is dangerous...

Well we all knew that really, but today it has been declared officially! ON THE BBC!! THEREFORE IT MUST BE TRUE!!! A long-term study made by researchers from the University of Surrey has revealed how dangerous UK roads are for cyclists, with a disproportionately high number of cyclists injured on the road, compared to car drivers and passengers, as reported by The Independent newspaper.

For those of us who can't move to Holland tomorrow (apparently much safer) or don't actually give a monkeys & cycle anyway, we thought we'd share a few of our favourite cycling blogs & sites...

For those of you who no longer feel safe cycling out of doors, may we introduce you to the exotic world of indoor trick cycling - here some very clever German ladies in leotards show you how it is done...

Glen Pointon fishing the Wye

We've enjoyed watching Glen Pointon's exploits for a year now & he's just posted his first underwater fishing video, showing his release of a Grayling that he caught fishing the River Wye. What we love about Glen (other than his amazing blog, beautiful photos & dashing good looks!!) is that he catches all the subtleties of fishing, down to the fact that Grayling are a different colour on the Wye than they are on the River Dove.

See more of his posts at http://glenpointon.blogspot.com/

The other thing you have to love about Glen is that, doubtless through years of experience & tough times, he makes it all look smooth, effortless & verging on the elegant, unlike the poor gents pictured below who just make you think "WHY?!!!" ;0)

The world's most expensive bicycles...

We're not the sort here to revel in other people's misfortune, but we did have to have a little chuckle at this...
Britain's biggest retailer, Tesco's, is taking legal action after mistakenly paying almost £1 million for six bicycles which should have cost less than £1,000, sources said.

Tesco is seeking restitution of the overpaid monies following the error by its finance team, who in August should have paid £984 for six Muddy Fox Suspension Bikes but paid £984,000 instead. Oops! Still, best not to laugh too long or hard as it can happen to the best (or stupidest) of us ;0).

Mach1 Team - F1 in Schools Regional Champions...

Our hearty congratulations to Mach1 Team from Lutterworth College, who at yesterday's regional finals qualified for the National F1 in Schools Championship final being held at Birmingham's NEC, during the Autosport International Show, in January 2010.

Mach1 celebrated a trio of trophies, taking overall victory in the Formula 1 class, as well as taking awards for the Fastest F1 car(1.289 seconds) and Best Engineered car.

Pictured below are Johnny, Elliot, our very own Chris in the middle, Alex & Ricky. Chris joined the talented quartet for race-day at the NEC, to offer whatever technical assistance & general encouragement he could (& to get to play with lots of cars...).

The cars, designed by students aged between 9-19 race along a 20 metre track, shown below, at speeds in excess of 60Kph...
Teams are judged on car speed, as well as supporting evidence of their design, verbal presentation and marketing display stand in ‘‘the pits”. The Mach1 team's pit was very impressive & made great use of all the materials they had gleaned from their sponsors, including SMB Bearings.
The victorious Mach1 can't rest easy though, as preparation must begin in earnest for the national finals, now only 8 weeks away.
We'll be working hard for the team too & are looking for ways to improve our bearing performance as much as possible to achieve an ultra free-running, high speed finish. We've already treated previous bearings with Diamond Nanolube & are now looking again at this option, compared to results achieved by coating bearings with a Molybdenum disulfide suspension. Both substances act as thousands of tiny particles, suspended in a carrier oil, coat the surfaces of the bearing & float between the metal parts of the bearing to keep surfaces apart (it will still work even if the carrier oil is gone):
  • preventing metal to metal contact
  • prolonging bearing life
  • reducing friction
  • preventing galling, gouging & scoring
  • preventing heat build-up
We're not sure ourselves yet whether there will be any advantage between the two different methods for this application, but we'll do our best to find out very soon.
We'll also be investigating the benefits provided by ceramic hybrid bearings (ceramic balls, metal cage, rings & shields). The speed increase for hybrid bearings is, on paper at least, approximately 30 percent with adequate lubrication. Hybrid bearings can also operate better with limited lubrication as the lower friction material generates less heat but running speed should be reduced.
A word or two of caution - ceramic hybrids have become something of a fashion "fad" in recent times, with many Chinese hybrids flooding the market. These bearings are often of a poor quality & do not deliver on a theoretical promise to reduce friction & increase speed. For Mach1, we'll be trying to deliver on the theoretical promise by sourcing Japanese ceramic balls for their bearings... watch this space ;0).
