Latest from Aaron Skippings, downhill skater...

Aaron in action in California earlier this year

We had a lovely message from our friend Aaron Skippings at the weekend:

Thanks Aaron!  We are so glad that our skate bearings have helped your 2014 downhill skate season to go with & bang & we can't wait to see how you progress in 2015.

Aaron Skippings, downhill skater update...

Our friend & SMB skate-crew member Aaron Skipping has already had a hectic start to his downhill skating season.  Aaron is competing using our ceramic hybrid skate bearings this year & it sounds like he's getting pretty impressive results with them.

Aaron says:
"I am in love with the ceramic bearings! Sooooooooooo fast!  I've been really busy lately with my skating! Just been in Belgium for the championships and did really well - I had 7 qualifying races to determine a position and I never finished below a 3rd place.   Unfortunately, because of time pressures they cut it down to 16 people bracket for the semi-finals so i didn't qualify!! Bit lame but hey, I had fun and the UK kicked ass in Belgium!

I also just booked my flight to California for September!!! Exciting! I will be doing the Angies Curves in California and the famous Pikes Peak in Colorado! 2 of the gnarliest races on the IDF World Cup tour!  Too excited!!!"

Thanks for the update Aaron, it sounds like you were robbed in Belgium, but we're sure you'll make up for it during your US invasion later this year!  We can't wait to bring you more updates from Aaron as the downhill skating season progresses...

SMB Bearings review from Aaron Skippings, downhill skater...

Thanks so much to Aaron Skippings for his fantastic review of our products - it's always great to hear that our bearings are a real help to competitive skaters, gravity sports exponents, cyclists & more.  Here's what Aaron had to say:

Skate Bearing

Ceramic hybrid skate bearing

"SMB Bearings are an awesome bearing company from Brize Norton in the UK , these guys have been hooking me up with bearings for skating use , in the picture above on the left is a standard skate bearing from smb and on the right is the ceramic version . As soon as i used these i knew i liked them , they run super smooth and dont make noises or rattles . The bearings are also pretty good at holding the water out if you decide to ride in wet conditions.  I took a few sets of these bearings away with me on the euro tour, i wanted something decent for the world cup races and smb showed me the way. The ceramic versions i especially love as the smoothness of the bearing is at a super high level , no noises and no nonsense from smb again. its hard to say if there is a speed difference between the ceramic and the standard either way i couldnt tell but you know the quality is much higher in ceramics. There super kool bunch of guys have definatly created a brilliant bearing and i hope that other skaters from the uk and even global try these bad boys out , because i gurantee once these bearings are in your wheels ,you'll be riding faster!
Aaron"

Thanks so much for the high praise Aaron - we've put a lot of work into finding the best quality, genuine skate bearings around - we've lots of technical info on them at our website & we also tell you how to care & maintain your bearings for the best performance.

To keep up-to-date with Aaron, check out his blog & of course we'll update you when we have news of his latest exploits to share :0)

Skaiti - skaters raising money for Haiti

SMB were delighted to sponsor Keith O'Leary, who took part in Skaiti (a fantastic fundraising event for disaster relief in Haiti) on Saturday 10th April.  Skaiti was a 24 hour event in which 250 brave souls attempted to skate as far as possible in 24 hours, around Dunsfold Park in Surrey.

Keith has survived to tell the tale & reported his progress to us today:

"Well, I managed 125 miles in total and had a fantastic time in the sunshine before taking a tumble at roughly 2am on Sunday. Stepping on a wheel in the darkness often results in a face plant.

My tent looked incredibly welcoming at that point, so I grabbed a little sleep before setting off again. The organisers, Jo, Jack, and Steve did an amazing job in putting on the event and looking after everyone. The Ceramic Bearings you supplied fared very well and I got some good feedback from other participants - especially regarding the cost price (Powell/Bones ceramics being a lot more expensive, and not commonly stocked).

I took a photo at the start of the event with my nice clean SMB T-shirt and hat. There's also one of me coming out of a speed tuck and looking far too camp for my liking (to save Keith's modesty, we promised not to show the "camp" picture!). There will be a few more emerging as people upload images to Facebook etc.

Thanks again for your support.  Keith "

What a phenomenal event!  The official website http://skaiti.webs.com/  will be worth checking out (it's not too late to make a donation) & should have more photos of the event coming up soon.  Our hearty congratulations to everyone who took part, volunteered, organised etc, as you've managed to raise an impressive £13000 so far.

Skating, surfing, snowboarding - Playmobil style...

A slightly long, but excellent homage to those most excellent Playmobil dudes.

I just used to lose their heads/limbs/torsos under the sofa & then get them stuck in the vacuum cleaner during botched rescue missions myself...

Latest inline skate/landboarding vids..

This amazing video has just popped up on YouTube & we thought it was well worth looking at!

And we must give a nod to an excellent chap from America, Pat Hinch, who has grabbed my fancy by combining two favourite hobbies, landboarding & skating (although he appears to be a lot better at both than I ever was). Just click on the link below to be whisked to his video:

And sticking with landboarding for a few minutes...

Good eh?!!! When I needed replacement bearings for my board I got rubber sealed bearings & had them re-greased with water-resistant, free running grease so that they turned easily but kept all of the beach nasties out! Just a little pointer for landboard bearing maintenance - if you brush your wheels to get the sand off them after a landboaring sesh at the beach, be careful not to brush the seals that cover the bearings as you might actually be pushing grit into the bearings, eventually making them much harder to turn.

Ye Olde Fashioned Skating 1970's stylee...

Oh bless them! Little did they know whilst practising their skating-into-the-wall trick many, many times that we'd all still be laughing at their obscenely short shorts 30 years later (I'm clearly only jealous - I had to wear my brother's hand-me-downs through the 1970's & 80's, including his old underwear & dubious combat phase, & I'm a girl... no one should have to suffer like I did!).

Check out this uber-cool retro offering from 1978 :

Happy weekend everyone!

Schaeffer Mclean - sponsored skater update

More Skateboarding >>

How cool is our little dude?!

If you didn't get the chance to meet him at the recent opening of the new Glastobury Skate Park & want to meet the mini miracle in person, Schaeffer will be at the NASS (National Action Sports Show) at the Bath and West Showground in July. He says "I am looking forward to skating the street course and ramps and as part of the Route One Riders Team".

Schaeffer's Mum has given us all a real boost, by telling us "He is always telling other kids about SMB bearings and they frequently ask to see his bearings in action. He usually kicks down on his wheels very hard and shows them how long they spin for. They even have competitions to see whose wheels spin the longest and his always win!! As you can imagine he is very proud of being sponsored by you."

A big thank you to you both, we're really pleased & proud to be your sponsors!
